Historical Society (IVHS). The IVHS held its 2nd Annual Flag Day
Celebration at the Cadiz Cemetery and Howe-Prescott House on Sunday,
June 12, 2016.
The activities began at 12:30 pm, with the picnic held in the field
next to the Cadiz Cemetery, courtesy of Kevin and Terry McClory.
Drinks and hot dogs were served, as were a number of delicious
salads, desserts, chips and other treats.
Formal activities began at 1:30 p.m. with a presentation by Mr.
Bob Breton, Mayor of Franklinville, who read Ruth
Apperson Rous'
essay, "I
Am The Flag."
At the conclusion of Mayor Breton's speech, a prayer of invocation
was given by Reverend "Mac" Bixby, from the Farmersville
Community Church.
A flag raising ceremony was conducted by local Boy Scouts: Averey
Pockey, Star Scout; Jake Freer, Star Scout; Joe Dick, Scout; and
Seth Putt, Scout, led by Scout Master, Steve Pockey and Assistant
Scout Master, Dale Freer.
The National Anthem and God Bless America was sung by the Ellicottville
Central School Jazz Chorus directed by Ms. Pat Waldron.
The Rushford Coronet Band, led by Rachel Smith Decker, provided
music throughout the afternoon's events.
Sons of the American Revolution: Steve Booth, President of the
Chautauqua Chapter, and Elijah Monroe, President of the Niagara
Frontier Chapter of the Sons of the War of 1812 both gave speeches.
Honor, recognition and tribute to Sergeant Ernest Weller, Technician,
U.S. Army Signal Corps. was given by Sr. Vice Commander, Post
9487, Franklinville, VFW.
Maggie Fredrickson introduced re-enactors who spoke about the
people they were representing and who are buried at the Cadiz
Cemetery. Bruce Fredrickson, acted as his ancestor, Nehemiah
Rogers; Ginny Scime acted as Abigail Rose Curtis; Joel Scime
acted as Theophilus Howard; and Duane Walker, acted as Isaac
Searles.
The Howe-Prescott House and barn were also open for visitors
to view throughout the day - Cheryl MacPherson Walker acted
as Polly Clark Mead, and Frances MacPherson Boston acted as
Rhoda Mead, hostesses at the Howe-Prescott House.
Demonstrations were done by Mr. Pete Andrews and his brother,
both blacksmiths, and another family member. They demonstrated
the art of heating and molding iron.
There was a quilt tying demonstration and quilt display available
for viewing by Betty Hackett, IVHS member.
Bear Cat Alpaca owners, Bruce and Katherine Rossette, brought
2 alpacas for viewing and a selection of beautiful alpaca woven
goods for sale.
Scott Armison and his team of horses provided rides to and from
the Howe-Prescott property and cemetery, much to the delight
of those who took advantage of it.
We are grateful to Franklinville Central School for the loan
of their sound system, and to neighbor, Doug Phillippi for the
use of his generator during the day's events.
Al Fish, Vice President of the IVHS, made a wooden bench which
was raffled off - the bench was made from the maple trees that
had formerly been standing at the front of the Howe-Prescott
House. The trees had to be removed due to damage being done to
the old pioneer house roof. Yvonne Schuyler of Lyndon, won the
raffle for the wooden bench.
Other raffles were also offered -- a quilt raffle, and a cross
cut saw and tool kit. Those raffles will continue through the
summer and winners will be announced at the Harvest Dinner in
October.
The next meeting of the IVHS, an annual summer picnic, will be
held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Howe-Prescott
property in Cadiz, on Route 98 South. All are welcome. Please
bring
a dish to pass
at the picnic - hotdogs and drinks will be provided.
